Outside Madrid

Depeding on how long you plan to stay, you might want to enjoy a day trip outside Madrid. Here are some suggestions:

Toledo

A UNESCO Word Heritage City just 50 minutes by car from Madrid (or 30 minutes by train). Hometown of "El Greco", one of Spain's most well-known Rainaissance's paintors, and famous for being the City of Three Cultures, with Jews, Muslims and Christians. Its "School of Translators" made Toledo an intellectual centre in Europe around the
XIII century.

Tip: for a super good lunch with exceptional views of the city go to La Ermita Restaurante (https://www.laermitarestaurante.com/)

Avila

For those who want to travel a bit further, perhaps you want to get yourself lost in the streets of mediaeval town of Avila, just 1 h 20 min from Madrid. Yet another World Heritage site, this medieval city is most famous for its walls from the Middle-Ages surrounding the historic centre and its beautiful cathedral. Avila is home of Santa Teresa de Jesús (one of the
most exceptional figures in Spanish spirituality) and other Hebrew, Islamic and Christian mystics of the time.

Here you can enjoy history, traditions and gastronomy - don't miss the Chuletón de Ávila (veal chop) and Yemas de Santa Teresa (sweet cakes made from egg yolks and sugar).

El Escorial

A little village home of UNESCO's Word Heritage site Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (we are not kidding, how fortunately located is Madrid!). Just 45 km northwest of Madrid and close to the mountains, you can find one of Spain's Royal Sites if you are up for a bit of history and architecture. El Escorial has been the burial site for most of the Spanish kings of the last five centuries and is also an active monastery. If you drive 10 minutes outside the village you can reach Philip II's chair, the authentic stone chair where Philip II used to supervise the construction works...

Tip: typical traditional madrilian food (e.g. "cocido madrileño") at the classic restaurant El Charolés.
